Making Connections: Labour Market Integration, Immigration and Essential Skills

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Earlier this fall, CONNECT was lucky enough to host the third in a series of consultations being held across the nation, through funding from the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC-OLES).

Focusing on immigration integration, essential skills, and where those two realms meet, the forum brought together employers, service providers, trainers, literacy organizations, federal and provincial government representatives, other key stakeholders and experts from the field for a day and a half of discussion and learning.

The forum’s objectives:

  • Become better informed about the connection between immigration and essential skills in the context of labour market integration
  • Share information and best practices on immigrant initiatives and literacy and essential skills.
  • Identify strategies, opportunities and issues relating to immigration and essential skills in the context of labour market integration
  • Facilitating, networking and making connections between stakeholders, and provide an opportunity to hear stakeholder perspectives

Over the course of the day and a half, a number of excellent panel discussions and presentations were held; presentation downloads are below the fold. The final report will be made available early in the new year. (more…)

CONNECT has a new look

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Welcome to the new website!  We are pleased to launch a new brand and site, designed to keep you better CONNECTed with everything that’s happening here and at the Ontario colleges.  New features and functionalities have been incorporated to make sure you can easily access the news, project information and event registrations in just a few short clicks.

Along with the website, CONNECT has a number of new and exciting initiatives to showcase.  From the employer-focused Are You Ready workshops, spotlighting cultural awareness, to the pan-Canada SCALES project, encouraging the use of Literacy and Essential Skills by career practitioners; from the multi-year CIITE project that works with internationally-trained immigrants, to our  multi-provincial Pharmacy Technician Bridging Program, CONNECT is working with the Ontario college system and beyond to provide training and education, to create welcoming communities and to produce an informed, skilled workforce.

We welcome your feedback; if you have any comments, questions or suggestions, please feel free to email me at smirle@collegeconnect.on.ca.  We’ll continue to add new features to the site, so if there’s anything you’d especially like to see, please let us know.

Enjoy your stay, and come back soon!
